From Data Entry to Diagnostic Thinking: Coaching File Review Judgment

Date & Time
Wednesday, September 23, 2026, 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM
Description

This session is for team leads and managers who train and review bookkeepers. Many firms can teach how to do tasks, but struggle to teach staff how to think during file review. We’ll share a practical training framework to build file review judgment—teaching staff how to set expectations, run “sniff tests” across both the Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss, and know when a number requires deeper investigation (even when the work appears complete or AI suggests it’s fine).
Attendees will leave with coaching prompts, investigation triggers, and simple documentation methods that help junior staff stop relying on first-glance outputs and start thinking like reviewers.

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Implement a coaching method that trains staff to compare results to expected ranges and business reality.
  • Create an “investigation triggers” checklist for Balance Sheet and P&L reviews (what to question, what to ignre, what to escalate).
  • Coach staff using a repeatable questioning script (expectation → evidence → variance → next test) to find root cause faster.
  • Standardize how staff document reviewer judgment so decisions are consistent across the team.
  • Reduce review rework by training staff to catch issues that pass a first glance (including AI-assisted work).
